Letters

                                                                    January 30 59

        My dear granddaughter Judy,

I am glad to wish you a happy birthday because it gives me
happiness to have a granddaughter to wish a happy birthday. I am
therefore enclosing a small gift—or, say, money, instead—for the
happiness you give me. I would have been still more happier if you
would be interested in good books. It would be a pleasure to talk
with you about literature and history, and enjoy your conversation. I
hope that when you enter high school you will realize how important
it is to learn and spend time on the most worthy and valuable thing in
        life.
           Happy birthday to you.
                                                                   Grandpa Abe

                                                                     Feb 28 60 [Postmark: Jan 28]
        My dear granddaughter Judith,

I am sorry, having forgotten the date. Therefore I am late. My
mind is preoccupied with the breaking up of a home of thirty-four
years and having to hunt for a place to lay my head. To me it is a
great and difficult event, so my mind is perturbed.
I wish you a happy birthday.
                                                                    Grandfather Abraham
