        shed tears at these stories, unable themselves to read. We condemn
        the past for not educating our women like the men, but we lived in
        Eastern Europe at a time when few men could read and write. Only
        in Western Europe did women begin to be enfranchised in the last
        century. The Church was the dispenser of learning and it considered
        women as household goods, unnecessary to educate.
