preaching about abstinence never could. But these demonic women
who hatched this scheme have never been exposed! If we can bring
this crime against God to light, the entire feminist atheist movement
would be discredited, don’t you agree?”
A response was not immediately forthcoming. First Karp had to
gasp and shake his jowls. “Hugh, this is fantastic! Why, it makes no
sense at all! What possible reason could women have for wanting to
        exterminate homosexuals?”
Brisbane grimaced. “At first glance, it would appear that gay men
pose a threat to women only by reducing the pool of eligible male
heterosexuals; and that could be viewed as offset by the concomitant
reduction in number of potential rapists. Florence’s group, however,
was looking at another issue: jobs. Until the explosion in
homosexuality after World War II, the pattern of sexual
discrimination in the workplace meant two things: women could only
succeed in certain professions, but they enjoyed a clear advantage
within them. In teaching, in the arts, in medical aid, fashion and
beauty and interior decoration—in short, in all the jobs in which
society considered the feminine touch essential, women naturally had
the edge. What has happened in the past few decades is that
homosexual men have entered those fields, bringing with them the
dominance their gender automatically confers, while women have
only been nominally admitted into the areas previously monopolized
        by men.”
“But kill them?” Karp’s eyes bulged as his face reddened. “We
have been waiting for God to smite those deviants, to destroy the
dens of corruption flourishing in our cities. Could He have chosen
half-crazy women as His instrument?” A waiter approached their
table, eyeing the pair suspiciously. They ordered coffee, and Karp
glared at the man’s apron as he returned to the kitchen. “I’ll bet that’s
one of them. They ought to have waitresses in here, hmmph. Now,
let me be sure I understand you, Brisbane: somehow you have
uncovered something that no one has ever heard of before. How can
        that be?”
“Please, Mr. Karp, don’t get so excited. I don’t want to attract
attention. As I said, this plot was carried out by a small number of
nurses working in Miami; only one of them had access to the virus.
