lid off this conspiracy. Think of what it will mean for your
        organization to spearhead the attack!”
Phineas could not help but absorb some of Hugh’s enthusiasm.
“Well, this might be of interest to the lobby. Now, I know you
pretty well, Brisbane. You’ve got a good track record as far as I’m
concerned, although the board of directors don’t know you from
Adam. Have you checked out her story?”
“Yes, sir. As far as I could without her knowing it. I can document
her whereabouts for the past twelve years, since she left nursing
school. She did work for Transoceanic Airlines, as she claimed, and
numerous epidemiological studies have established international
flight attendants as the initial AIDS vectors. She says she has other
material to back this up, but she won’t release it until she feels safe,

Karp sat silently for a moment, again executing a digital paradiddle
on the table top. “All right,” he finally said. “How much does she
        want?”

A week later the directors of Liberty Lobby met to discuss Phineas
Karp’s proposal. Each director had an office in the fourteenth floor
suite comprising the organization’s executive headquarters in the
nation’s capital; their joint deliberations were carried out in a small
conference room adjoining their private washroom and kitchenette.
Karp himself was not invited to this inner sanctum. He knew of its
existence, and aspired to membership in the elite troika, but never
forgot his subordinate status when delivering documents to and
receiving orders from the directorate. Once he had presented his
report—based almost entirely on the uncredited research and analysis
of Hugh Brisbane—to the three powerful men whose hands were on
the lobby’s helm, he had returned to his own office rubbing his hands
with glee, fully expecting a raise in their estimation, if not in his
