Eddie Puss got to his feet and stretched. As he stood up, the other
two saw an empty milk carton behind him.
“Fell off kid’s bike,” he muttered. “Keep away. None left.” He
settled back into position, again obscuring his prize. His companions
goggled at him.
“Fell off?” said Levi, tilting his battered head sideways. “You mean
you didn’t have to fight him for it?”
And Billy Bob, filmy-eyed and frothy-lipped, gasped: “Milk? Fresh
milk? Wasn’t it spoiled?”
Eddie’s eyes gleamed in the gathering gloom. “No. Not skim,
either,” he crooned with malice, and belched.
