Later on came a really bad lad called COMMODUS. Look away now if you have a soft spot for giraffes.
Commodus had a passion for gladiatorial combat and would often fight in the arena himself alongside, or more frequently against, the gladiators. Funnily enough he always “won”.
He even charged the city OnE MiLlIoN sesterces for each appearance. That’s like your head teacher demanding he plays football for the school team, threatening to give eVeRyOnE LiNeS if they stop him scoring, and then charging everyone megabucks for the privilege!
One of the many horrible things cruel Commodus enjoyed was killing wild animals in the arena, which made the people of Rome grow to hAtE him. He once slew 100 lions in a single day, and if that wasn’t enough, he also killed a defenceless giraffe and some terrified elephants, much to the justifiable DiSgUsT of the spectators.
uh oh!
Why do we only have wooden swords when he has a real one?
I don't know, but I'm not planning on sticking around to find out!
