  The Aztecs had an ENORMOUS army for the time. This was because all boys were trained to be warriors, so in effect all men could be part of the army when needed.
It’s thought that during the siege of a place called Coixtlahuaca in 1458, an army led by the Aztecs had a whopping 300,000 men in it. That would require a LoT of tortillas at dinner times.

If your dad did well in battle it was a way for him – and the family – to move up through society, becoming better off and more highly respected.
But strange though it may sound, one of the main ways to become known as a great warrior wasn’t by killing the enemy, but by CaPtUrInG them – although unfortunately for the prisoner, the end result was the same . . . they’d be used as a HuMaN SaCrIfIcE in rituals.

     There were several different levels of Aztec warrior. Commoners who did very well in battle could be moved up to the noble class and could enter some of the warrior societies.
Commoners who captured one prisoner were called Tlamanih. But the more you captured the higher you could rise.
