CHAPTER NINE
A
fter leaving there, I went to work in Mandeville as a maid. I
went to work with another family. They weren’t very nice
at all; plus, my mother became sick. But she didn’t want me
to come home, so I kept working. She also needed money for
medication, which I was able to supply.
She was admitted to the hospital. I can’t remember how long she was
there, but she left on her own and eventually passed away at home. We
buried her in the family plot.
I stayed around for a while and then moved on. Through a domestic
recruiting office, after paying them a certain amount of money, they
found me a job in Kingston. So here I go to the big city.
I met a girl on the bus; the journey was so long we became friends. We
promised to look each other up when we could, but once we parted at
the bus depot, I never saw her again.
I worked with those people for over three months and never received
any pay. I’ll never forget their names—Mr. and Mrs. James. Now, the
irony of this is that my granddaughter, who just got married in June, is
married to a guy with the surname James. If they are related, maybe I
could collect back pay from them...
