CHAPTER TEN

          N
o one told me anything, but as I got older, I tried to figure
out what could have happened in my mother's life. She was

the first child born to her father and mother. After she was

born, they went their separate ways and each got involved with
          someone else.

Mom had a child with some man who took the child from her because
it was a boy. Again, she was left alone. So, out of desperation, she lived

with this man — who is now my stepfather.

          St. John 4:7–10

Another short story my mom read to me was called The Woman at the
Well. I just love putting them in my own words. She always says, “You

          are a strange child.”

          Here goes…

          THE WOMAN AT THE WELL

She just wanted to get a bucket of water and go back home early before
all the other folks came out, because she had a very bad reputation in

her village, and no one liked her. But there was a man sitting on the

side of the well who asked her for a drink.
