MAKING IT GROW
(1 Kings 17). And, at times, we will be simply moved with compassion
to give generously to meet the needs of others. In 2 Corinthians 9:2-34,
the Apostle Paul describes such a situation when the Macedonian
church gave out of their own poverty: “In the terrible ordeal they
suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich
generosity. For I testify that they gave according to their ability and even
beyond it. Of their own accord, they earnestly pleaded with us for the
privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. “
But, more often, the Scriptures tell us to give thoughtfully in accordance
with our means. In 1 Corinthians 16:1–2, Paul recommends a disciplined
approach to giving: “Now about the collection for the saints, you are to
do as I directed the churches of Galatia: On the first day of
every week, each of you should set aside a portion of his
income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be
needed.” And again in 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul gives this direction: “Each
of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Similarly, in 2 Corinthians 8:11–13, Paul instructs: “For if the eagerness is
there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according
to what he does not have. It is not my intention that others may be
relieved while you are burdened but that there should be equality.”
These Scriptures teach us to give thoughtfully and consistently. For
someone, that may mean sponsoring a child through World Vision,
(which at the time of writing costs $40 per month). Or a couple of $10
coffee shop gift cards per month for the homeless guy on the corner.
Review again the heart condition of generosity in Chapter 5 and make
a commitment to give. Whether moved by compassion or by the
leading of the Spirit, or with careful planning, the Scripture is clear, we
unlock a blessing over our lives when we give.
IN CONCLUSION
The secrets to making your money remain and grow are not really
secrets, but practical habits of life: Living within your means, saving
consistently, learning how to invest wisely, being watchful over the
state of your investments, taking care of what you own, giving back
and building your local church. Like all habits, these are also formed
by consistency and perseverance until they become second nature.
