CAN YOU BE TOO RICH?
CAN YOU BE TOO RICH?
You may of course ask the question, “Can I be too rich?” or “How much
is enough?” The Bible tells us that if we delight ourselves in the Lord,
He will give us the desires of our heart (Psalms 37:4). Therefore, God
expects us to have desires for our lives. But as we have seen, the Bible
also consistently warns us against greed. However, I believe that if our
hearts are truly submitted to God, our desires will not cross the line into
greed. Because a heart submitted to Him will always seek first to do what
pleases Him.
When our hearts are consumed by what touches His heart, there is no
room for greed. We will only desire to do His will, and we will not love
both God and Mammon.
So then, what is the answer to the question “Can you be too rich?” Most
definitely, yes. A person is too rich when their wealth becomes the focus
of their attention: When they take their eyes (and their hearts) off the
prize and lose focus on eternal life. So, if we can teach our hearts at the
outset to value our life in God more than the pursuit of riches, I believe
that we will find joy (and true life) at every stage of our journey.
“Give me neither poverty nor riches—
feed me with the food allotted to me.
Lest I be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?”
Or lest I be poor and steal and so profane the name of my God.”
(Proverbs 30:8-9)
