Reason To Sing

awakening. Even though I had lived in Calgary for many years,
I still felt like a farm girl. Hey, I didn’t even know what a bagel
          was. Or yogurt. Seriously.
Hudson and a few other guys were in charge of some
activities for us first-year newbies and I was excited to get
involved. I knew it would be a good way to get to know some
new people. And I very much needed to do that.
There was the pub crawl (which I can’t actually remember
much of) – a total blast (I think). There was a baseball game.
Lots of other stuff too and there was always Hudson, right in
the thick of things. I actually wasn’t the least bit attracted to
him. Other girls were, but not me. He seemed a bit arrogant
and a lot cocky - two traits I really didn’t care for. But then,
one cold December night just before exams, some friends
invited me to go dancing. I loved disco so it didn’t take much
persuading. Besides, it was a Thursday night and in campus life
that’s pretty much the beginning of the weekend.
“Kelita. Meet Hudson. Hudson, Kelita.” Morrisa introduced
us. “Sorry, maybe you’ve already met? Kelita’s on 4th floor.”
“Uh, no I don’t think we have,” Hudson replied nonchalantly.
I was a little surprised he didn’t remember me. Guess I made
a really good impression. “Well, actually we did meet.” I smiled
as nonchalantly as I could. It wasn’t easy because he really was
          awfully handsome.
“Oh, we did?” He looked a little embarrassed. Not a lot.
          Just a little.
“It was during Frosh Week. Don’t worry. I know there were
a lot of new people. I was on the pub crawl.”
I couldn’t tell if he was just playing it cool or what. I was
pretty sure he would have remembered me from that night.
“You were? Oh gee, I’m really sorry.” He graced me with a
          gorgeous smile.
