Reason To Sing

                             Chapter Twenty-Nine

                         Too Hot To Handle

          Pink hair.
I now have a shock of pink hair just screaming, “I’m not
          your typical country girl!”
No kidding. Heck, Reba is still wearing jeans held up by
shiny rodeo belt buckles and Dolly Parton hasn’t even dreamed
up Dollywood yet. And Shania? Well, Shania is still Eilleen!
But I have hot pink hair and I love it!
Even though I am now all about Nashville, people are
always telling me I should go to Vegas. They think that’s where
I belong because I put the “show” in showbiz. What the heck are
they going to say when they see my pink hair? I want to be an
artist who is taken seriously for my original music and singing.
But at the same time, I do love exploring and taking chances.
Isn’t that how great artists are born? By being courageous and
          daring?
Hudson and I are still working toward that illusive dream
of a major US recording contract. Unfortunately, there are very
few ‘signed’ Canadian country artists. And there are twice as
many males as there are females being signed or getting airplay.
These are the days when radio programmers say, “No two
bumps in a row!” Which translates to You can never play two
female artists back-to-back. It’s very much a man’s world. On
both sides of the border. (I’ll let you figure out what “bumps”
          stands for!)
RCA Canada is pretty much the only label that actually
signs Canadian country artists. Carroll Baker, Dick Damron
