and Family Brown. That’s it. Anne Murray is with Capitol, but
she is an international superstar and in a league all her own.
Still, we keep doing what we can with our limited resources.
We continue making trips to Nashville. It’s only a 12-hour drive
from Toronto when we do it straight through. That’s not so bad.
We stop only for the essentials.
Or strip searches.
Thank goodness that only happened once and all I can say
is this: when they asked me to pull down my jeans and panties
and bend over, I gave them a damn good show! Good thing I’m
flexible!
The main purpose of this particular trip to Nashville is to
record a new song. “Too Hot to Handle” was co-written with
my band member Cyril Rawson. We think it’s a pretty catchy
tune and I am elated when Cyril tells me his publisher, Mary
Bailey, is willing to record the new song in Nashville, at her
expense! I am in between albums and have just won the Rising
Star award so I need to get something out to radio. This is win/
win!
Mary Bailey, a Canadian recording artist in her own right,
has a young 19-year-old female wanna-be rock star staying
with her in Nashville. Somebody named Eilleen Twain from
Timmins, Ontario. When Mary greets us at the studio, she
immediately asks, “Kelita, would you mind if Eilleen was to
sing background vocals on “Too Hot to Handle”? She’s dying
to sing something while she’s down here. I think you’ll find her
voice very powerful and it will blend well with yours.”
“Why not?” After all, Mary is footing the bill for this
recording. How can I say no?
Eilleen and I go into the booth together and cut the
background vocals. We have lots of fun and that’s that. Little do
I know that a few years down the road she will become Shania!
