Reason To Sing

                               Chapter Fourteen

                          Jimmy’s Hideaway

What an exciting day it was when my brother Jimmy got married.
          That’s right. Jimmy got married!
We all loved Mary, his new wife. I got to wear my brand-new
yellow dress with the black and white velvet trim. And my hair
was done up just like my cousin Rhonda Lee’s. We looked so
grown up! Vian was still in ringlets, but she got to be the flower
girl, in a mauve dress, carrying a single yellow rose. She looked
adorable. And I’m glad she got to feel so special. Even Mommy
was feeling pretty good that day, which was such a wonderful
thing. If she was in pain, she sure didn’t let anyone know.
And there’s more! Sure, the wedding was amazing, but
something even more exciting is on the way. Jimmy and Mary
are adopting a little boy named Shawn! I guess when Jimmy
was in the Armed Forces, he was exposed to something bad and
that’s the reason they can’t have any kids of their own. Doesn’t
matter. Vian and I are pretty excited about being aunties.
So, now here we are, just Vian and me, about to arrive in
Victoria, BC on an airplane. We’ve flown here all by ourselves.
I must admit I am feeling pretty adult. I mean, I am 14. This is
my first time flying without my parents. Vian is with me but
she’s only 11 so I am in charge. Poor Mommy can’t come with
us because she needs as much rest as she can get. We understand
and the stewardesses have been very nice to us.
We arrive in a flurry of commotion and Vian and I finally
get unpacked and settled into our new home. The next several
days will be quite an adventure!
