Chapter Fourteen
Jimmy is up ridiculously early every morning because he
does the morning show at the local radio station. When he
leaves the house Vian and I are still sound asleep. But we love
hanging out with Mary all day. Helping to take care of Shawn
is hard work! Mary is very quiet and sweet and maybe even a
bit shy. She’s down to earth and more of a farm girl. But I don’t
think Jimmy is very much of a farm boy, at least not anymore.
No two people could ever be more different than Jimmy and
Mary. I have no idea how they ever ended up together but I’m
glad they did.
When Jimmy arrives home from work he just wants to eat
and then hang out in his basement. I like to call it his hideaway.
But Mary encourages us to join him.
I hold onto the side railing as Vian and I tread carefully
down the wooden stairs. I can already catch a whiff of
the patchouli incense floating up. I love that ‘hippie’ scent.
Jimmy’s music is playing loudly as usual. He loves his role
of DJ. Except for the early morning part, his job as the morning
man at CJVI is almost perfect for him. Jimmy has always been a
huge music fan. In fact, he took me to my very first concert (the
Canadian group Dr. Music). It was at the Stampede Corral in
Calgary. I just loved that song that was on the radio - a big hit
called “One More Mountain to Climb.” The whole live show
experience blew me away. I loved everything about it, and it
made me even more determined to become an entertainer.
My brother adores Roy Orbison (the guy who always wears
the dark sunglasses). And the Beatles - Jimmy is crazy about
them. I remember watching the Fab Four on their very first
Ed Sullivan Show. Our whole family was gathered around
our black and white TV. Jimmy was even lucky enough to see
them live. Twice! In fact, he loves them so much that when
he got married, he wore a Nehru suit, Beatle boots and had
