SESSION 9 : Song of Songs Chapter 4:1-6
Jesus three times. Like the Shulamite, we need the experience of His
love and the power of the Holy Spirit—and we must not forget that it
is a work of His grace. Notice how her glistening eyes of love are
veiled. It is not always prudent to divulge the revelation of the love we
receive from the Lord, as it can cause those who have not yet
experienced it to feel less worthy or valued by Him, which is not the
case. When the Holy Spirit permits the sharing of these love
experiences with others, it must be done wisely and veiled with great
sensitivity and humility.
The text continues with Him now beginning to see the fruit of His
sanctifying work within her. It is the Holy Spirit’s work alone—in
cooperation with our wills—that can bring us to the place of
abandonment and sacrificial love for the Lord. “You are like a sacrifice
ready to be offered,” He says. Interestingly, animals used for sacrificial
purposes had to be without injury or blemish—that is how He saw the
Shulamite, and that is how He views us. We are a completely finished
work in Christ. Jesus bore our sins at Calvary—we are as pure and
white as newly fallen snow.
To give a more in-depth explanation of this section of the chapter (i.e.,
verses 1 and 2), I looked at the New International Version (NIV)
translation and read the following:
“…Your hair is like a flock of goats descending from the hills of Gilead.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn, coming up from the
washing. Each has its twin; not one of them is alone.”
