contrary—it is a further display of the tender-hearted, cherishing, and
nurturing love of God for His people.
It is within such an environment that we are strengthened, because
people thrive on words of love and encouragement. As we feed on the
truth of His Word in an atmosphere of total love and acceptance—warts
and all—we will grow in trust and in the knowledge of who Jesus is
and what He is like.
Notice also where she is. The Shulamite has been feeding on the
pastures of Mount Gilead, which translates to “Hill of Testimony,” and
is also the location where sacrificial animals were kept in preparation
for temple sacrifices. By eating the sweet grass from this pasture, she
is becoming fully equipped to walk out a sacrificial and laid-down life
and to perform the good works prepared for her by the Lord to walk in
before time began (see Ephesians 2:10). By His grace, the Shulamite is
getting ready to be a living testimony to the greatness, majesty, glory,
and power of our God.
Read the words of Watchman Nee:
“For where, we ask, is consecration most manifest? Is it not where
souls have been in rich pasture and received much food from the hand
of His grace?”
Continuing with verse 2 from the NIV, her teeth are now the topic of
discussion and are compared to: “a flock of sheep just shorn, coming
up from the washing. Each one has its twin; not one of them is alone.”
