SESSION 12 : Song of Songs Chapter 5:2-8 (TPT)
Satan had a plan of destruction and wanted to prove to God that these
people did not really love Him—but his plan failed, just as it failed
during the struggle with Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane.
Similarly, as we continue with the text, we will see that, like these
heroes of faith, the Shulamite also ranks with those who remain loyal
to God—despite the fear and misgivings concerning where further
surrender would lead her.
If you recall, back in Chapter 2:8, she had a similar experience of
hearing her Lover’s voice as He leapt joyfully over the mountains of
separation to reach her. On this occasion, however, the purpose of His
visitation was for a different reason altogether. The former encounters
were all about awakening her to His love and affection, joy, and
faithfulness, but now, He is about to reveal another facet of His
character—as a Man of Sorrows, acquainted with grief.
This section of verse 2 depicts the scene that took place in Gethsemane,
where Jesus spent Himself in prayer and sweat drops of blood as He
prepared to be a living sacrifice of love for us.
Remember, in Chapter 4, she had asked Him to do whatever was
necessary so that the spices might be shed abroad? Well, here He is,
wanting to grant her request. How were the spices shed abroad in Jesus?
Through the suffering endured at Calvary on our behalf. We cannot
compartmentalise Jesus and decide which bits of Him we want. We
have to decide to embrace all of Him—“for better or for worse.”
