SESSION 12 : Song of Songs Chapter 5:2-8 (TPT)
she is about to encounter suffering on a scale she has never known—
and He allows it to happen.
Read these words from Jeanne Guyon in her commentary:
“What inconceivable suffering! Nothing like this has ever happened to
you before. Before, the Bridegroom had openly protected you, and you
lived under His protection. Now He has gone away—and it is your
fault! What has happened? You thought you had already suffered much
through the many trials that had tested your faithfulness to God. These
were small matters compared to the suffering you must now experience.
All that you have suffered so far is but the shadow of suffering. You had
no reason to expect any less.
Do you think you can be united to a God covered with wounds, torn
with nails, and stripped of everything, without being treated the same
way? You will find yourself ‘wounded by those who keep the walls of
the city.’ These keepers are anyone whom God uses—whether they be
men or demons—and they are used to take away the covering of your
own self-righteousness.”
As I have meditated on these verses, it has become increasingly clear
that, as God’s people—His beloved, perfect partner—we are called to
embrace and view suffering as a positive tool used by God to conform
us to the image of His Son. Jesus learned obedience through suffering.
