event, our works are to be fully directed by the Holy Spirit and from a
place of ease.
When we move from spiritually led works to dead works of the flesh,
signified by working in the sun, it certainly leaves its mark on us. We
become irritable, tired—even to the point of suffering total burnout on
occasion. This is not God’s intention for us. It never was. His yoke is
light.
Moving on, notice how the term “step-brothers” is used in this
particular translation. This is because these relatives share the same
father but different mothers. In Galatians 4:21-31 (well worth reading),
we are told how Abraham had two sons: one by the slave woman
(representing a work of the flesh) and one by the free woman
(representing a work of the Spirit). His son by the slave woman was
born due to Sarah—having received a promise that she and Abraham
would have a son—naively taking it upon herself to help God out!
The Jewish people are still paying the price for this mistake. The son
that was born to Sarah, however, was the result of the promise of God
being faithfully fulfilled.
Dead works, striving, legalism, and dead religion all belong to Hagar,
the slave woman—and many of us in the Body of Christ are still living
like slaves. Instead of working excessively, we need to retreat to a
secret place with God and allow Him to minister His love, bringing
healing to our wounded hearts, so that we may be prepared for the
