UNDERNEATH IT ALL
But back in our math class, while Mr. Clark was handing out our
test, a boy got up from his chair and interrupted the class.
“Uh, excuse me, everyone, but I want to ask a special person a
question.”
We all turned to him, wondering who he was talking about.
Mr. Clark looked annoyed and said, “Josh, please, sit.”
Josh ignored him, looked at the girl with curly blonde hair in the
front—who always wore lots of jewelry—and asked, “Brenda, will you
go on a date with me to the dance party?”
Everyone was shocked and started hitting their tables, chanting,
“Say yes! Say yes!”
Brenda looked really surprised and was blushing like crazy. I
honestly hoped she would say yes.
It took about a minute, but she finally said, “Yes, I will.”
Almost everyone got up and applauded them. Josh went to her and
hugged her. But Mr. Clark looked angry—like he was about to rage. I
guess he didn’t like the “date party” idea. He firmly instructed everyone
to sit and continued handing out the math tests.
After class, I was walking in the hallway to the cafeteria for lunch
when my best friends came up to me.
“Hey, Jo!” Tara said, touching my shoulder.
“Hi.”
They kept smiling at me like I’d sacrificed myself for them or
something.
“What?” I asked, confused.
