UNDERNEATH IT ALL
This was the same guy who used to call me names throughout the
year. The same guy who dumped slime on my head days ago. The guy
who never let a week go by without teasing me.
And now, he was asking me to the dance?
I didn’t know what to say. Part of me wanted to say yes—I mean,
he looked... cute when he smiled. And my best friends would finally
stop bugging me about not having a date.
But then again, this was Caleb. The Caleb. What if it was just
another prank? What if I said yes and looked stupid later? I wasn’t even
sure I’d be going to the party in the first place.
But somehow, what came out of my mouth was: “Yes—uh, why
not?”
Don’t ask me why I was even blushing.
His smile widened. “Really? I thought for sure you’d say no.”
“Why?”
“Well, because we kind of don’t like each other?”
“Then why ask me?”
“I don’t know. I guess I just wanted to. Besides, it’s just a dance—
not a proposal. I figured it could be friendly.”
“It is,” I agreed. “But just so you know, we’re not in a relationship
now just because I said yes. Got it?”
“Of course, Hoopster—I mean, Jorelle.”
