ack at home, Mom surprised me with a special gift. She went
upstairs and returned carrying a large black bag, the words
Superior Bridal printed boldly on it. Bridal—like a bride, I
thought curiously.
“Jorelle, guess what I got!” Mama announced, handing me the bag.
“What is this?” I asked, eyeing the bag with a mix of confusion
and curiosity.
“Just open it!” she urged eagerly.
Jirelle and Mama watched me expectantly as I unzipped the bag,
revealing a stunning green floral dress. Delicate flowers adorned the
waist and sides, and the fabric felt unbelievably smooth against my
fingers.
“I got you a prom dress! Well, a dress for the dance tonight,”
Mama smiled.
“What? Oh my gosh, thank you, Mama! But you didn’t have to,” I
exclaimed, both Jirelle and I shocked—though Jirelle’s reaction was
far less warm.
“Yeah, Mama, you really shouldn’t have,” she said sarcastically.
Mama frowned, turning to Jirelle. “What do you mean? Your sister
needed a dress for the dance.”
“Yeah, and you actually got her one? I can’t believe it! You didn’t
even get me the outfit I always wanted,” Jirelle snapped.
