He turned away from his friends and smiled, and we slipped behind
the school building to talk privately.
“What’s up?” he asked, leaning casually against the wall.
“So… how do you feel about graduating? Feels like we’re stepping
into adulthood,” I said.
“Yeah, I suppose. Have you decided which high school you’ll be
attending?” he inquired.
“Not yet, but probably the one closest to home.”
“Parkland High? That’s a decent choice. So, are we still on for the
dance tonight?”
“Absolutely,” I replied.
“Good. See you there,” he said, before returning to his group.
A subtle tension lingered between us—a quiet, unexpected
connection. This wasn’t our usual banter filled with teasing and insults;
instead, there was an ease, a mutual smile exchanged, as if we were
beginning something new.
Perhaps… I was developing feelings I hadn’t anticipated.
