THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
“Yesss!” Tara exclaimed, walking in.
Erika and Tara then went to their dates—and friends—while I went
to get a drink from the snack table. I was so thirsty, especially because
I had to walk a mile to school since Mama’s car was at the mechanic’s,
and I looked pale and dehydrated.
After I drank some cranberry juice and tried a few cake treats, I
tried to spot Caleb in the crowd. Then Principal Wilkinson came on
stage and said into the microphone, “Alright, our DJ is going to play
some smooth, slow-mo songs for us to dance to!”
I was starting to get really worried that Caleb had ditched me—
that he hadn’t even come. I still couldn’t find him, and everyone was
already dancing with their dates and having fun.
But then I saw him. I saw him with… with a different girl. A
random girl I’d never seen in our class—or even at our school. I was
confused and headed straight toward them.
“What the heck is going on?” I demanded. They both froze, startled
by my sudden appearance.
“Jorelle, you’re here,” Caleb said, clearly surprised to see me.
“Of course, I’m here! Did you really think I wouldn’t come, just
so you could dance with someone else?”
“Look, it’s not what you think, I just—”
I crossed my arms with a fierce look and blurted out, “You just
what? Thought dancing with some random girl would make me
jealous? Well, it didn’t! Maybe this is one of your stupid pranks!”
