UNDERNEATH IT ALL
“No, it’s not! This is Amanda—she’s just a friend. Yeah, we’re
enemies, but I’d never pull a prank like that on you. I was even trying
to stop—”
“No, you didn’t. I can tell you didn’t. You just broke my heart,
Caleb. I thought we were past being enemies—maybe frenemies, at
least. How could you lie to me and dance with another girl right in front
of me?”
Amanda stepped in. “Well, you weren’t here, and Caleb was
waiting patiently, so I guess he had no choice but to dance with me.”
I was furious.
Amanda pressed on, “And Caleb? He’s a traitor. He’s lied to every
girl in school—just like he did to me on our date last year.”
Caleb looked mortified. “Amanda! How could you?”
But she just walked away, joining her friends. I stared at Caleb,
humiliated and disappointed. He looked back at me, stunned and
embarrassed. Without another word, I fled the gym and headed to the
parking lot, sinking onto a bench beneath a streetlight.
