THAT WASN’T THE PLAN
But then, unexpectedly, Chris noticed me walking around and
stopped me. He pulled me lightly to one of the lockers and held my
palm.
“Hey, Kandis.”
I hesitated to talk. I just kept looking at Jayson, who was in front
of us. Luckily, he didn’t see us. But I really didn’t have time to do this
with Chris.
“Uh… hey, Chris.” I faked a smile.
It seemed he knew I wasn’t comfortable because he tilted his head
and frowned, rubbing his palms against mine. “Is everything okay with
you?”
“Yeah—actually, no, not really.”
I suddenly remembered Jayson wasn’t the only one I needed to
apologize to or fix things with. Chris also needed an explanation. I
mean, I’d feel really awful once he found out Jayson likes me.
“What is it?” He breathed near my ear, and it made me stop
thinking. “You can always tell me anything.”
I somehow wanted and didn’t want to tell him what was going
on—if that even made sense. But I just couldn’t. I already broke my
first-ever guy friend’s heart. I didn’t want to break another! Even if he
actually needed to know the truth, I didn’t feel like he needed to know.
After all, he’s my maybe crush. But I also couldn’t lie.
“Uh… I need to talk to you about something going on with me and
Jayson.” I slowly took my palm away from his.
“Jayson? Your best friend? What’s up with you and him?”
