THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
Chris asked it like I wasn’t supposed to be up to something with
him. I mean, I wasn’t—but Jayson made it look like I was.
“We stopped being friends. Jayson decided we should separate,
which I think is just a break, and now we aren’t talking. Well, he won’t
talk to me.” I fidgeted with my hands.
“Oh, that’s so sudden. Nellie told me about you guys not acting
like ‘best friends’ around each other anyway, so…” Chris shrugged.
Wait—Nellie knows?
Does this mean Jayson told almost everyone I don’t want to know
about this? Like his family?
“Really? Jayson is already spreading the news?”
Right when I said that, I heard a small slam on a locker in front of
me—and it was Jayson, who had just finished packing his stuff for
home.
I turned to him, then to Chris, then back at Jayson, who passed by
us, holding his backpack tightly.
“Hey, Jayson!” Chris waved, turning his head to him.
I froze—completely. I could feel Jayson’s frustration and anger in
the air. It was like I could even hear him breathe hard. I’d messed up
so bad; I was scared to talk to him.
He didn’t answer back, of course. He wasn’t even paying attention
when Chris said hi. But then he turned to us mid-conversation and
folded his lips shut, making his face look like a hard rock—cold and
unwilling to be there. Then he walked out of the school.
