The first time we saw a plane overhead, we all took off
and hid. My father said we were to run into the garden
so that if they bombed the house, we would be safe. And
we believed him. (Stupid idiot.) The war wasn’t even
fought in our country—there was just some training
going on at that place called Sandy Gully.
There was nothing to buy at the few shops we had. We
lived in the dark; we couldn’t light a lamp at all. This
seemed to go on forever.
