She left, a free woman.

I remember my mom always reading me these Bible
stories. Bless her heart.

I had to tell my stepfather first about my
accomplishment because he was so mean. Then I would

tell them both that I was starting to take private lessons.

I took home the note the teachers gave me and read it to
them—because only my mother could read.

All they had to do was buy me some exercise books. But
before I could finish speaking, the man I called "Dada"

walked away and said, “Not gwine happen. Can’t afford

it.”

At the time, all that was needed were six exercise books

and a few other items to get started; the school would
provide the rest. The school would’ve helped with other

books and whatever else was needed.
