I didn't just get an extension — the officer told me I
could apply for landed status if I wanted to stay in the
country. I had landed in Canada, scared to death, with
only ten dollars to my name.
During that time, I occasionally did housework to earn
some money. In those days, one could look in the
newspaper and find a job — no problem!
The problem was the house where we had rented a
room. The owner gave the tenant who rented the house
notice for not paying the rent, so we were evicted. I don't
recall how we managed during that period, but each day
was a struggle. I found another live-in job, where I
would be solely responsible for taking care of the house,
cooking, and cleaning, in exchange for a place to sleep
and a meal to eat.
All this happened in the first six months after landing in
this beautiful country of Canada.
