left, some of that congregation were emboldened to stand up for the
truth of God’s Word.
The chapter continues with the response of the Shulamite. She has
heard the entreaty of the Lord to arise and follow Him, and His
command to now deal with the compromises in her life that would
thwart her fruitfulness. However, her reply indicates that she is not yet
ready for this next step of faith. Yes, she has reached a level of intimacy
with her Beloved and security in her identity as a child of God; She
knows the sound of His voice, understands the call to take up one’s
cross, and is aware of the need for the manifestation of the resurrection
life of Christ to be seen on earth. But it is still not sufficient for her to
be able to move out and follow Him to the holy mountains of separation
(verse 17).
The actual Hebrew translation of “the mountains of separation” literally
means “mountains of Bether”, which is the Hebrew word for
separation. As I read these words, the Holy Spirit quickened me and
led me to 2 Corinthians 6:16–18 and also Romans 8:18–19. Let me
explain:
2 Corinthians 6:16–18 (TPT) reads:
“For indeed, we are the temple of the living God, just as God has said:
‘I will make my home in them and walk among them. I will be their God
and they will be my people.’ For this reason, ‘Come out from among
them and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘Touch nothing that is unclean,
