There are times when the Lord desires that we seek Him for ourselves,
rather than relying on others, as they may not have the answers we
need. The Lord tells us that when we seek Him with all our hearts, He
will not disappoint (see Matthew 7:7–8). He sees her earnest sincerity
of heart and returns to her. How beautiful to read of her joy at this
renewed love encounter.
The Shulamite is beginning to realise that life in fellowship with Jesus
far surpasses the cost involved. She is now able to declare in verse 4:
“I found the one I adore! I caught Him and fastened myself to Him,
refusing to be feeble in my heart again.”
His love and grace have brought her to the place of greater
consecration, and she vows to return to her first love and focus now on
Him, as opposed to herself.
There is a powerful verse of scripture which, in my view, sums up
beautifully the above words from verse 4:
“For as the loincloth clings to the loins of a man, so I made the whole
house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the Lord,
in order that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a
glory; but they would not listen.” (Jeremiah 13:11, NRSV)
These words moved my heart so deeply, as it was impressed upon me
even more urgently—the absolute need for intimacy with our
Bridegroom King. An intimate relationship with God has to be the
