RADICAL LOVE
attention—looking away from all that would distract in order to fix
one’s gaze on Jesus. Aphorao, in Hebrews 12, is having eyes for no one
but Jesus.
Is this not what the Shulamite has done throughout her journey of faith?
He is inviting us to do the same.
Interestingly, in other versions of the Bible—such as the NIV—
reference is made not only to a wall but also to a door, and a different
interpretation can be observed here. Let us take a look at NIV verse 9,
which says:
“If she is a wall, we will build towers of silver on her.
If she is a door, we will enclose her with panels of cedar.”
We have just read about what would happen if she were a wall, but
what is the significance of being a door?
The meaning of this is as follows (theological commentary of Song
of Songs 8:9), and is from the same source I mentioned at the bottom
of page 323:
“But if the little sister is a door remaining open to ungodly influences,
she will need to be barricaded with the hardness and durability of
cedar. The goal of divine chastisement toward those whom God is
bringing to Himself is the experience of repentance and faith in our
Lord Jesus Christ. Such will result in holiness (consecration and
separation), without which none will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)
