MyRide West TN – Henderson County
The Southwest Area Agency on Aging and Disability (SWAAAD) added
a new county providing volunteer transportation during the first year
of grant funding. In January 2019, MyRide West TN - Henderson County began accepting applications and completed its first ride. One unique thing about the Henderson County program is, while in its planning phase, the steering committee decided to offer rides not only in Henderson County, but also expand the option to ride outside of Henderson County for medical appointments only. Henderson County is located east of Madison County where the primary regional hospital is located.
Realizing many of the Henderson County residents would be traveling into Madison County for specialist appointments and services, the steering committee wanted to make sure the residents of Henderson County would be able to utilize the transportation service that best suited his or her needs.
Additionally, because crossing county lines, would mean more traveling for volunteers, Henderson County decided to charge a lower annual membership fee ($20) and then adjust its ride fees based on destination: $3 per ride within the county and $5 for rides when traveling outside of Henderson County. The steering committee also decided to include a fifty mile radius to help with time spent on trips. This program’s framework has been working very well for Henderson County and, as originally thought, about half of the completed rides have been for those traveling into Madison County.
