South Central Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability (SCAAAD) began working on its first senior volunteer transportation program in the summer of 2018.
As part of the development process, they reached out to local elected officials and other community leaders to provide education on what volunteer transportation does and how they could be a part of this district’s first-ever program. They created a steering committee comprised of the county executive; four city mayors/city managers; clergy; representatives from the chamber of commerce, home health, assisted living facilities, a local bank, the regional public transportation office, a regional hospital, and an older adult with disabilities.
While working on building the steering committee, the SCAAAD was also speaking with the local Lawrence County Senior Citizens Center, Inc. (LCSCC) about contracting with the AAAD to house and operate the first volunteer program. After the planning and hiring of staff, the SCAAAD held a public launch event to introduce the new program to the community. The kick-off event was held in October of 2018 and the first ride was given mid-November of 2018. In just five short months, SCAAAD was able to have the very first volunteer assisted transportation program up and running in their region.
