17.3.1 Long-Term Disability
Long-term disability benefits are offered to full-time employees working a minimum of 30 hours per week.
If an employee becomes disabled and cannot work for an extended period of time, this coverage pays 60
percent of the employee’s salary, up to the policy limits. This is a voluntary benefit and is funded solely by
the employee.
17.3.4 National Insurance Scheme
GAU pays the employer’s contributions to the Guyana National Insurance Scheme, which covers worker’s
industrial illnesses, accidents, and death. The National Insurance Scheme provides coverage for related
medical and rehabilitation expenses and a portion of lost wages to employees who sustain an injury on
the job. Georgetown American University abides by all applicable Guyana laws and regulations. If an
employee sustains a job-related injury or illness, it is important to notify the supervisor and Human
Resources immediately. The supervisor will complete an injury report with input from the employee and
return the form to the Human Resources department. Human Resources will file the claim with the GAU’s
insurance. In cases of genuine medical emergencies, report to the nearest emergency room.
17.4 Training and Development of Employees
Annual training sessions are organized for employees with an effort to improve their performance at the
University. Employees are expected to attend at least one academic development session per academic
year. Opportunities for faculty members to develop their teaching and assessment skills are provided
annually in the form of short courses and guest lectures. All faculty members are required to have on file
higher education training and assessment certifications on file.
18.0 Educational Programs
GAU offers medical programs for the pursuance of a graduate degree in medicine in its School of Medicine.
It plans to expand its program offerings to include nursing degree, paramedical programs, sonography,
OSHA, and OPITO programs for the oil and gas industry. Additionally, it plans to create a School of
Business, which will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in affiliation with other universities.
18.1 Program mode and delivery
The programs offered by GAU will have a combination of distance learning using the online mode for
delivery and classroom settings. This format will facilitate social distancing and obviate the need for
students to travel and be accommodated solely in dorms on campus, which has become challenging and
problematic due to the Pandemic caused by Covid-19. All required clinical skill experiences will continue
to be clinician student interaction in certified healthcare settings. Virtual laboratories will be available to
substitute for laboratory training if needed.
18.2 Aligning Programs with Expected Outcomes
The institution recognizes the need for aligning its programs to produce expected outcomes. Hence, at
the core is the Student Achievement criteria, which emphasize learning and success. The design and
improvement of educational experiences are geared towards the enhancement of student learning. This
is achieved by the identification, evaluation and publishing goals and outcomes together with multiple
measures that document student success. In this regard, GAU has inculcated survey questions (tables 2,
