Space Coast TPO, Brevard Public Schools to Celebrate Bike to School Day
By Abby Hemenway, public involvement officer, Space Coast Trasportion Planning Organization
The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization is so excited to once again announce this year’s Bike to School Day scheduled for May 9, 2018. The SCTPO has helped coordinate this event since its beginning since 2012 and partners with Brevard Public Schools to engage students and parents alike in the benefits of bicycling to school.
Bike to School Day is designed to remind both parents and students about the pleasure of biking to school and how simple one-day events can led to great changes in the community. Such changes include long-term bicycling and walking programs, new sidewalks and pathways, enforcement of unsafe driving behaviors, and needed policy changes at schools and in communities.
This year, we are determined to have the largest participation yet! Your school can participate in many ways, such as:
• Coordinating a bike to school event
• Planning bike safety lessons
• Announcing in school communications (Blackboard, Peachjar, marquee, school newsletter, morning announcements, etc.)
Or as parents, you can help orchestrate some unique Bike to School Day ideas, such as:
• Organize a bike train for May 9th along a safe route to school. For tips on bike trains see the Wheels on the Bike Go Round and Round toolkit or Get Rolling with a Bike Train handout.
• For students that live further than one or two miles from school, find a central location such as a park or library a short distance away from the school. Use this location as a starting point for a group bike ride to school.
• Organize a bicycle ride around the playground or school grounds before school. This option is great for schools that do not currently have facilities to safely bike to school.
National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to join together to celebrate and to build off of the energy of National Bike Month.
