More piercings, ‘extreme’ hair now OK
“Extreme” hair styles, makeup and hair colors are now OK for students in Brevard Public Schools — unless they somehow create a disrup on.
The school board voted unanimously Dec. 12 to update its policy on student dress and appearance.
The policy update also applies to piercings, allowing students to wear studs or rings in noses or other parts of their face or body.
Before, “extreme” hair was prohibited, and students were permi ed to display only ear piercings while at school.
S ll prohibited under BPS policy are any jewelry or accessories “that pose a safety concern for the student” including:
• Tongue rings
• Dog collars
• Wallet chains
• Large hair picks
• Chains that connect one part of the body to another
Students who violate the dress code will not be admi ed to class and may be suspended from school, the updated policy says. The policy changes were e ec ve immediately.
Board relaxes ban on campus mobile-phone use
BPS principals now may allow students to use mobile phones while on campus under a policy change approved by the school board Dec. 12.
Previously, BPS students were permi ed to bring phones to school, but they had to be powered o or set to silent and kept out of sight at all mes.
Under the revised policy, principals may decide whether to let students use their phones before and
a er school,
on school
buses, during
lunch breaks, in between classes,
and during a er- school ac vi es.
Such uses are permissible as
long as they do not disrupt the educa onal environment, the updated policy says.
The board voted 5-0 to make the changes.
During class, phones s ll must be turned o or turned to silent and kept out of sight.
Students are s ll banned from using phones to view social- media sites (Facebook, Twi er, Instagram, Snapchat) that are otherwise blocked on school internet systems. Students are s ll prohibited from tex ng or typing on phones while driving on school district property – as they are everywhere else in Florida.
