Redesigning Instruc on
Recently, Christopher R. “Kit” Adams of Brevard Adult Educa on in Melbourne
had a proposal accepted for presenta on at the annual Florida Council of Teachers of English Conference in Mariana, Florida, at Chipola College. In the conference theme of Finding Our Bal- ance, the presenta on was tled “Reaching Safety: avoiding the rip currents
of curriculum” and presented a new way of crea ng classroom curriculum, one that balanced teacher me and crea vity with covering state standards. In short, teachers usually create curriculum for teaching stan- dards and cite the standards for each lesson plan; the presenta on showed how to rearrange the standards in a project or por olio-oriented format o ering fewer lessons, but allowing deeper study of each. All stan- dards are covered and the teacher/students end up with a project in hand when they end the class. Bre- vard Adult Educa on received recogni on for sponsor- ing this talk, which was well received.
