        MAHA DURG UTSAV (FORT FESTIVAL) 18-23 FEB 2023

                                With an aim to spread information about one of the
                                greatest warriors- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s
                                life and history of the Maratha Empire, Maharashtra
                                Tourism dept. is organizing ‘Maha Durg utsav’ at
                                Shivneri Fort, on the auspicious occasion of Shiv
                                Jayanti. The festival will be celebrated with pomp
                                and vigour on the Shivneri fort, beginning from 18th
                                February and concluding on 23rd February, 2023.
        This festival will help to promote the cultural heritage of Maharashtra along with
        commemorating the great warrior ‘Shri Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj’. Shivaji Maharaj,
        who was known as ‘Janta Raja’ i.e. people’s king, was born on Shivneri Fort on 19th
        February,  1630.  This  is  the  393rd  year  of  his  birth  anniversary.  His  period  reign
        between  1630 to  1680. Since  little  he  was  trained  in various  aspects of
        administration such as military training, spiritual practices, war tactics etc. When he
        was just a teenager he captured his first Fort, Torna which was under the control of
        Bijjapur.  He was the first king who had captured and constructed 370 forts all over
        India. He was coronated on 6th June 1674 on Raigad fort by Pandit Gagabhatta. He
        was a great visionary who created a strong army & naval base. Chhtrapati Shivaji
        Maharaj expanded his Maratha empire by inspiring people of his administration to
        form “Swarajya” i.e. self-government and not to get exploited by Mughals. He was an
                  extraordinary king who fought with great valour and spread the
                  Maratha Empire up till Attock.
