Dear Rich Township District 227 Families,

Rich Township High School District 227 is improving how it communicates students’ academic
progress to reflect a change in how grades are calculated, and to provide students, parents, and
guardians with accurate and up-to-date information.

                   • Second semester grades will be cumulative, as they were first semester.
                   • There will be no separate summative grades assigned at the end of third quarter or fourth
                       quarter.
                   • No third quarter mid-semester report card, or fourth quarter mid-quarter progress reports
                       will be mailed.
                   • The only grade report that will be mailed home will be a final semester two report card.

Instead of progress reports or report cards mailed home, parents/guardians will receive a letter
reminding them to check their student’s progress in Power School, and all grades will be
communicated through Power School. Power School is District 227’s online platform that tracks
each student’s grades and attendance in real time. Teachers update grades each week and so
Power School gives students and their parents/guardians the most timely information about
their academic progress. (recommend bold face for this sentence)

All Rich Township High School teachers are using an improved system for calculating grades. The
lowest grade a student can receive for an assignment or assessment is 50%. If a student does not
submit an assignment, he/she will receive a 50% and a notation that the working is missing. Zeros
are no longer recorded in gradebooks. If work is completed late, the 50% and missing work
notation are replaced by the corrected grade. Using this system will help students and their
parents/guardians differentiate between assignments or assessments which a student failed to be
successful at, from those that were never completed.

It is essential that every parent/guardian have access to Power School. If you need help obtaining
your account information, or help creating your parent account, please send please an email to:
technology@rich227.org with the subject: PowerSchool Parent Account Information. A
representative from the technology department will provide you the support needed within 24
               hours.

               Sincerely,

               Dr. Stephen Bournés
