The role of women in various aspects of life not only requires equal rights between
men and women, but also represents its function in the sense of community
development. Family’s economic condition is the main reason why women work.
Unimproved family income makes the women formerly in domestic sector participate
then in public sector for the sake of helping improve the family’s economy. Family’s
average economic need has not been sufficed because the family head’s income is
relatively low; thus, to meet the family’s need, women attempt to work in warehouse
industry. This research aims to see the dual roles of women working in warehouse
industry in improving the family economy. The improvement of work participation
affects not only marketplace constellation but also women’s and their family’s welfare.
The increased labor force participation level affects not only male labor force but also
female labor force. Moreover, modernization and globalization makes some changes in
the demand for women’s role. This change of demand in turn makes gender equality
more visible. The role of women in work realm has contributed considerably to family’s
welfare, particularly in economic field. The working women will increase family’s
income and can automatically improve nutrition and health qualities of all family
members. Such condition makes women play two roles all at once: domestic and
public. A double role is called cultural dualism concept: domestic sphere and public
sphere. Paradigm of family work division developing within society is husband exists in
public work area as main breadwinner in the family, while wife exists in domestic area
to deal with house chores and to take care of children at home. Naomi wolf, a feminist,
in Dwi (2011; 362) states that the attempt of improving women’s life needs a bravery to
socialize feminism idea rationally and sympathetically, to change feminism into
human because feminism is the concept about personal self esteem and all women’s
self esteem. In the presence of women emancipation, the role of women in the past
was different from that in the present. In the past, women were allowed to be at home
only and in the present many women do some activities out of home, one of which is
working (Ninin Ramadhani; 2016). This research is intended to describe the dual roles
of women and the effect of dual roles of women working in warehouse industry in
improving the family’s economy. This research employed qualitative approach aiming
to understand the object of research in-depth. The research model used was
phenomenology started with observing and studying the focus of phenomenon to be
studied. The result of research indicated that people (community) accept women’s
integration into public domain and also influence decision on the type of job the
women choose. Dual roles of women involve tradition and transition, in which in
undertaking their public role, women should manage their time well in playing the
dual roles. The reason why the married women work is their family’s economic need
demand, because most of their husband work in private sector and their husband’s
income has not sufficed yet the family’s life need. Thus, through working, women can
help their husband meet their family’s economic need. Through working, the role of
women as wife and mother affects the family’s life and other family members both
positively and negatively. The positive effects include the increased income of family,
the built sense of understanding between family members, and the increased status of
family. The negative effects include social effect felt by children, and their mother’s
reduced attention and affection, and reduced attention and education because their
father and mother have worked out of home. Thus, they delegate children nurture to
other family members.
