This paper aimed to analyze the case of poor Minangkabau widows in the era of

risk society. Because of the privilege of the position of women as the successor of

the matrilineal, it was considered to still be empowered and would not be

entangled in poverty despite her divorce. However, cultural support was not

sufficiently able to cope with women from poverty. This study used qualitative

research method with case study. How dare women took the decision to divorce

due to various factors, one of which was influenced by the effects of

industrialization in the era of late modernity. The result of the study was first,

dilemma of an heirloom and ulayat. Second, the conflict of roles and stigma of a

widows. Third, the inability to deal with the labor market. Fourth, the change of

the spacious family system and ‘rumah gadang’. There was a firm division in the

right to ownership of property and land ulayat legally from institutions and

customary law so that women could still be guaranteed their rights when they

could no longer depended on their husbands and must escape the injustices

obtained in the marital situation that she undergoes.
