Distribution of drug users by Drug Group and
Gender

Gender and Drugs
According to the UNODC World Drug Report
women remain in the minority of drug users
globally yet tend to increase their rate of drug
consumption and progress to drug use disorders
more rapidly than men do.
Women now represent an estimated 4549-
per cent of users of amphetamines and non-
medical users of pharmaceutical stimulants,
pharmaceutical opioids, sedatives, and
tranquilizers.

Policy Implications

In the World Drug Report 2022 UNODC
recommend 3 key policy implications for
consideration .
Contain Criminal Markets:Members States
should enhance law enforcement controls
particularly with regard to the trafficking of illicit
drugs by sea containers or maritime routes.
There should be stronger focus on intelligence,
international cooperation and joint operations
to disrupt transnational organized criminal
groups that traffic these drugs.

Strengthen evidence-based care within
communities: Efforts should continue and
strengthen in providing education and support
to families and communities to prevent
individuals, and particularly young people,
turning to drugs to cope with the stresses of
their life.

Focus on vulnerable and emerging groups:
Agencies should work more closely together
and earlier on the delivery of prevention
strategies that focus on the most vulnerable to
avoid more widespread issues.
