WRITE IT Communicate

Emotional intelligence journal: Addiction. Discuss how you feel about addiction in any
form—to alcohol, drugs, food, sex, the Internet, gambling—whether or not it you have had direct
or indirect experience with it. Imagine that a close friend or family member has a dangerous addic-
tion of some kind. Use your emotional intelligence to describe how you would address the problem
10 with that person to produce the best possible outcome.
CHAPTER Real-life writing: Health on campus. Think about what you consider to be the most
significant health issue at your school—personal safety, alcohol or drug abuse, smoking,
weight management, and so on. Write a 500-word editorial for your school paper on the topic,
describing the details of the problem and proposing one or more solutions. For example, if
weight control is a problem, you might suggest changing the contents of the drink vending
machines. When you are done, consider submitting your editorial to the paper (have an instructor
or peer review it before you send it in).

                        WORK IT Build Your Brand

                         21st Century Learning Building Blocks:

                         ■ Initiative and self-direction
                         ■ Critical thinking and problem solving
                         ■ Information literacy

Taking responsibility for your health can make you a more valuable employee, in part because
many companies are putting pressure on their employees to do more in less time. Increased work
burdens, late nights, and work calls during weekends or off-hours create a great deal of stress for
workers. In addition, health care costs are on the rise for companies.
