CONGRESSWOMAN JOYCE BEATTY
“It is the honor of a lifetime to be voted by my peers to lead the Congressional Black
Caucus in the 117th Congress,” Congresswoman Joyce Beatty said the day in
December 2020 when she was chosen to lead the CBC during its 50th anniversary
year.
The woman who has represented much of Columbus in Washington since 2013 has
received many honors during her 22 years in public service.
Congresswoman Beatty stepped into public office in 1999 as a member of the Ohio
House of Representatives. She rose to become House Minority Leader—the first
woman to hold the party leadership post—in 2007-08, her final two years in office.
Since 2013, Beatty has represented Ohio’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S.
House. Another first: She’s the first Black lawmaker elected to Congress from Central
Ohio.
Now as chairwoman of the Congressional Black
Caucus, she’ll be a voice for millions more
Americans as the organization continues its work.
“Together—standing on the shoulders of the
13 CBC founders—we will continue to fight
for our families, fight for our communities,
and fight for justice for all.”
