SENATOR RAY MILLER



            Ray  Miller’s  favorite  saying  is,  “Never  allow  your  greatest  accomplishment  to

            become your highest achievement in life.” Perhaps that’s why his legacy extends

            far  beyond  his  years  as  a  state  representative  and  state  senator  in  the  Ohio
            General Assembly.



            Although  he  retired  from  elected  office  in  2010,  his  work  continues.  To  help

            prepare a new generation of leaders, he created both the Progressive Leadership
            Academy and the Ray Miller Institute for Change and Leadership. He also is the

            founder and publisher of the Columbus African American News Journal.



                                                                   Inside government, as a member of the
                                                                   Ohio  Legislative  Black  Caucus,  Mr.
                                                                   Miller  served  15  years  in  the  Ohio
                                                                   House  of  Representatives  (1983-1993

                                                                   and 1999-2002) and eight years in the
                                                                   Ohio  Senate  (2003-2010).  His  work

                                                                   established  the  Ohio  Department  of
                                                                   Alcohol  and  Drug  Addiction  Services,
                                                                   the  Ohio  Commission  on  Minority
                                                                   Health  and  the  Institute  for  Urban

                                                                   Education  at  Central  State  University.
                                                                   He  also  sponsored  legislation  that  led

                                                                   to  the  nation’s  first  state-level  funding
                                                                   for Head Start programs.
