Decks
• Builder installed decks have horizontal rails and were originally painted/stained. The
horizontal railing is no longer allowed by Fairfax County
• The approved replacement standard for deck railing is simple 2" x 2" vertical picket with
2" x 6", 5/4 capboard. All railings, including the stair railing, must be the same straight
simple wood vertical picket railing at the minimum height required by Fairfax County code,
as replacement becomes necessary
